Apathy Definition: The Enthusiasm of Doing Nothing
Apathy, that noble art of emotional hibernation, is the state of greeting life with a shrug so large it could qualify as architecture. Scholars insist it is not laziness, though it looks suspiciously like a sofa in disguise.
It differs from boredom, because boredom at least cares enough to complain. Apathy does not complain. Apathy doesn’t even show up. If boredom is a man tapping his foot, apathy is the foot itself—detached, indifferent, waiting to be swept up by janitorial staff.
Historically, apathy was first weaponized by philosophers who wanted to appear wise without having to do any chores. Entire civilizations have collapsed under its influence, though the citizens were too indifferent to notice the collapse, or even the dust cloud.
