Esoteric Definition: The Word That Hides in a Wardrobe and Won’t Come Out
Esoteric, from the ancient Greek meaning “hidden,” refers to things so secret and specialized that only a very small group of people understand them—usually because they were invented five minutes ago at a philosophy club meeting.
If something is esoteric, you can’t find it in normal conversation. You find it in footnotes, whispered in libraries, or carved into the bark of a cedar tree during an eclipse. It’s the kind of knowledge that makes you feel important for knowing it… right up until you try to explain it to someone, at which point you discover you don’t actually understand it either.
Warning: Extended exposure to esoteric concepts may cause:
Pretentious nodding
Sudden urge to wear turtlenecks in summer
Collecting books you never read, “for reference”
