Accolade Definition: When Praise Accidentally Bites You in the Shin
An accolade is officially a mark of honor. Unofficially, it’s a congratulatory slap that starts as praise but escalates into personal injury.
The term comes from medieval knighting ceremonies, where a lord would tap you on the shoulder with a sword to say, “Well done.” Unfortunately, this sometimes included lopping off a small but cherished part of your ear. Modern accolades are less bloody, though they still carry risks—such as being handed a glass trophy so sharp it could double as a weapon in a penguin uprising.
In polite society, the accolade is dangerous because it breeds expectation. Once you’ve received one, people assume you’ll continue to be excellent forever, which leads to stress, insomnia, and the sudden urge to grow tomatoes instead.
