The Wolf Haircut That Ate My Afternoon — And Possibly the World
I was minding my own business, trying to remember if soup counts as a hobby, when I saw it — the wolf haircut. It was on a stranger in the coffee shop, but it wasn’t just on them. It was happening to them.
It had the front-layer drama of a ’70s rock star who’d just lost a bet, combined with the back swagger of a small-town mullet that went to Paris and never came back. The bangs seemed to be holding a private conversation with gravity, occasionally winning.
“Nice hair,” I said, trying to sound casual.
“Thanks,” they replied. “It’s a wolf cut. It’s like a shag and a mullet had a child and gave it bangs for Christmas.”
I nodded, though my brain was busy wondering how two haircuts could have children. Then I remembered — this was fashion. Rules do not apply.
That’s when Brad — the self-declared “King of the Buzz Cut” — appeared from behind the counter like a barista in a Western. He pointed at the stranger’s hair and declared, “Too many layers. Hair like that will start making decisions for you.”
The wolf-cut stranger raised an eyebrow. “Better than a haircut that makes you look like a default video game character.”
Gasps from the espresso machine. The milk frother hissed in sympathy. I sipped my coffee in the corner, feeling like I’d accidentally bought front-row seats to a very stylish duel.
The insults flew — “overstyled mop” versus “undercooked head.” But somewhere between “your bangs look like they have opinions” and “your scalp must be bored,” they started laughing.
By the time I finished my drink, they were sitting together, planning how to merge their hair philosophies into something bigger. “First, we start a hair salon,” the wolf-cut said.
“Then a political party,” said Brad.
“And then,” the wolf-cut whispered, “we take over the world. With style.”
I left them plotting, wondering if I’d just witnessed the birth of a fashion-based empire. The air smelled faintly of coffee, ambition, and hair products that could survive a hurricane.
